Planning a private event takes real thought. You want a setting that handles the logistics well, food that guests actually talk about afterward, and a team that doesn't leave you guessing. At Portobello Banquets in Oakland, NJ, we've been doing exactly that since 1992, and the range of celebrations we host reflects how flexible this space truly is.
Whether you're coordinating a corporate seminar, a baby shower for 60 guests, or a school sports banquet, the right room makes all the difference.
What Private Event Planning Actually Looks Like Here
From picking the right room for your guest count to finalizing a menu that fits the occasion, planning a private event at Portobello Banquets is a straightforward process built around real choices. Six rooms, a full Italian and American menu, and a team that has been running these events since 1992.
Choosing the Right Space for Your Group
One of the first questions planners ask is whether the room will fit their crowd comfortably. We have six distinct banquet rooms, so there is a configuration that fits nearly every group size.

The Annex Room works well for gatherings of 50 to 70 guests. The Dome Room handles 70 to 120. Combining both gives you the Dome and Annex configuration, which accommodates 120 to 250 guests. The Front Room fits 50 to 60 guests, and the Back Room accommodates 50 to 70. The Main Floor fits 70 to 130. If you're not sure which room fits your guest count and setup, our appointment hours run Monday through Sunday from 12 pm to 6:30 pm, with late appointments available on request.
The Dome Room in particular has served as the backdrop for Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, sweet sixteens, and corporate dinners alike. It's the kind of space that adapts to a reception layout just as easily as it does to a seated dinner format.
Food That Reflects the Occasion
We serve Fine Italian and Modern American cuisine, and the menu options across our event packages reflect that range seriously. For a dinner event, hosts can choose between a buffet format and a plated dinner. Both come with substantial choices. A dinner buffet includes a cold antipasto station with items like fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers, and marinated eggplant, followed by a pasta buffet, entrées chosen from chicken, fish, veal, or eggplant, a carving station with top sirloin of beef, turkey, or smoked ham, and dessert. A plated dinner moves through a pasta course, salad course, three entrées, and dessert in a more structured sequence.

The entrée list goes deep. On the beef side, options include New York strip steak, filet mignon di Napoli, chargrilled filet mignon, and prime rib. Fish selections include flounder stuffed with crabmeat, horseradish crusted Chilean sea bass, and baby lobster tails. Chicken and veal preparations span francese, marsala, saltimbocca, parmigiana, and a number of signature house preparations.
For brunch events, the spread includes scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon, home fried potatoes, French toast, pancakes or waffles, along with hot luncheon items and a special occasion cake or Italian pastries. Optional enhancements let hosts add a raw bar, brick oven pizza station, mini burger slider station, or prosciutto and melon station, depending on the format and the crowd.
Bar and Beverage Options
Bar formats include open bar, tab bar, and cash bar. Open bar packages run in one, two, three, and four-hour increments with premium liquor available. Beer and wine packages offer unlimited options, and individual beverage choices include house wine by the glass or bottle, domestic and imported beer, sangria, a champagne punch bowl, and a mimosa bowl. A bartender is required for open bar and tab bar setups.
What to Plan Separately
Our team handles food, beverage, linens, and the celebration cake or Italian pastries that come with packages. Florists and decorators are welcome to come in on the day of the event for setup, though we do not provide decorating services directly. Vendors such as DJs and photographers are accommodated at a reduced meal rate.
For events that require outside vendors, we have a preferred vendor list covering DJ services, photography, videography, floral design, valet, and more. Vendors are required to submit a certificate of insurance. Menu and linen selections are due one month before the event. Final payment, guest count, and floor plan are due one week prior.
Conclusion
